TIP: Stress and tension

Did you know how the actual muscular tension affects the way you feel? Once you get stressed your muscles get tense, it’s the way of your brain telling your body: “Hey, there’s something wrong, get ready to fight!”” Your body gets all tense and the stress gets literally trapped in your body.

Use the muscle relaxation as a way to literally melt away the stress and other uncomfortable feelings.

Next time you get anxious, stressed or just feel uncomfortable realize where in your body you feel some kind of tension. You know what, try it right now, I bet you are shrugging your shoulders, holding your belly tight or have an awkward facial expression.

Before meditation but even during my work day I often perform a quick “body check”.

There are 2 ways how to go about this:

1. Close your eyes and let go of control, let the gravity drag your muscles down, let everything fall and relax.

2. Close your eyes and focus on each part of the body and see if it can be relaxed (I always imagine the part melting down). Check your forehead, ears, jaw, cheek, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, belly, legs, toes. Just the attention you bring to those parts will do its job, you don’t need to force anything, just enjoy the process.

And finally here is a challenge for you: write yourself a note on a piece of paper reminding you to check your body every 30 minutes. I promise you to realize that you are not actually in control over your body.
